Usagi Yojimbo: Rabbit Bodyguard
In the last five years or so I’ve been watching more and more Asian films. A lot of it stems from the lack of contemporary quality film and honestly just a different world-view on storytelling. I grew up watching a lot of Hong Kong cinema but never really had the exposure to the serious dramas of japanese Samurai films. It’s like when you have a dream and you see things you’ve never seen before; a whole realized world just waiting for you to enjoy.
Anyway, a lot that love is also found in Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo character. A comic that has been around since the 80s. So why did I spend a bit of time painting him? As it goes, with many comic book colleagues, a sickness in the family can wipe out ones savings where insurance (if they’re lucky to have any) doesn’t cover cost. A trend lately is crowd-sourcing help in these matters. So, this is my submission for the STAN SAKAI PROJECT to help with his wife’s medical bills. I mean, let’s face it, comic book people who are lucky to be married, owe so much to those who prop them up it isn’t funny. Hopefully, this submission makes it into the final book and hopefully you buy it. I think Dark Horse is releasing it…so stay tuned.
